There a new group of courses opening up on the eastern Algarve toward the Spanish boarder that offer challenging golf for medium and low handicappers.

A hours drive from Faro the Quinta de Ria and Cima courses are part of this group.

The area in so far as night life goes is a lot quieter that the well trampled courses of Vilamoura, Val do Lobo and Quinta de cima. Great for the serious golf but for social golfer would be disappointed with the 19th holes.

For a long weekend of good golf though the areas is great.

Designed by Rocky Roquemore, the American designer who has done a lot of work on the Algarve, (most notably at Val do Lobo and Quinta do Lago) they course at 5,273 is shorter than its sister course, Quinta da Cima, but is more exposed to the prevailing winds coming off the Atlantic.

Opened in 1992 the course has had time to mature and is rated one of the top Algarve courses. The course is set up with good landing areas and tee option to make it accessible to all levels of golfers. Though good use of water hazards and bunkering make it a challenge to score well.

The greens are quite large though the subtle undulations and slopes make then very difficult to read. There are some cracking holes mid-round , notably the stretch from 10 to 13.

If your are playing closest to the pin, the par 3 fifth is a good option requiring a tee short over water to a well protected bunkered green.

The back nine need some patience if you not to ruin your card.
